The Watertown Reds began play in the summer of 1998. They were founded and created by Player/Manager Chiodo and a cast of former Medford Mustangs players during the winter of 1997-1998, along with the help of local Watertown businesses. The Reds were first called by their first sponsor, Sterling Hager…..jokingly known as the Hagers before truly establishing their Reds nickname and logo.
The Reds play their home games at the friendly confines of historic Victory Field in Watertown. After 11 seasons in Watertown, the core of the Reds merged with the Medford Americans for the 2009 season, but are returning to continue their recent success and take the field for their 12th season in Watertown in 2010.
Throughout their history the Reds have become a staple of what good, quality amateur baseball is all about. Proving this as fact all you have to do is look at their history of making the playoffs, where they’ve been successful in getting a post-season berth in 5 of their first 10 years, including 3 out 4 seasons between 2004 and 2007.
As noted in regards to their recent success, the Reds saw 2006 as their greatest season so far. Going into ’06 with an overhauled lineup and roster, the team was able to achieve their most successful season since their inception in 1998 with their first ever trip to the ICL Finals. With a thrilling 3 games to 2 victory over the Lexington Blue Sox in the semi-finals, the Reds took on the Cassell Club for the title. Unfortunately the strong season came to a close to the regular season champions as they dropped the series 3-0. Though not going down without a fight, the Reds actually had late leads in 2 of the 3 games but ran out of gas as Cassell showed true grit and took all three games to complete the sweep.
The Reds will enter their 12th season in the always-competitive Intercity League and look to continue their recent on-field success as they come back to the friendly confines of Victory Field in Watertown for 2010 with their top level pitching staff in tact. Dave Martin (Tufts University), Brian Casey (Tufts University) and Lee Jamison (Villa Julie) all return to head the staff, while player/manager Joe Chiodo (Framingham State) will spot start and come out of the ‘pen. Luke Begley (2B/SS-Bentley University), and Jay Olson (3B/OF/1B-RPI) are veterans who will return to help lead the Reds back to the playoffs. Casey will take over as the team’s assistant manager and will help to construct one of the top teams in the ICL.
For more information on joining the team as a player or as a member of the Reds Diamond Club through a donation or team sponsor, contact Player/Manager Joe Chiodo at (617) 875-8088 or through email at jchiodo5@yahoo.com
The Reds would like to give a hearty shout out to all their supporters and sponsors and thank them for their continued support. GO REDS!
